The Silver Surfer was originally known as Norrin Radd, from the planet Zenn-La. He made a bargain with a cosmic entity called Galactus, serving as his herald in return for Galactus not devouring his home planet. Some of Galactus’s power was transferred to Radd, changing his appearance to that of the Silver Surfer. The surfboard, enabling faster than light travel, was also given to Radd at this time.

The purpose of the Silver Surfer was to travel the universe and locate planets for Galactus to consume. One of the planets he located was Earth. On Earth, the Silver Surfer managed to find the courage to betray Galactus, leading to his permanent exile on the planet he saved.

The Silver Surfer’s powers all originate from the “Power Cosmic”, which was bestowed by Galactus and can be used for teleportation, telekinesis and telepathy, along with resurrection, and projecting energy. Silver Surfer is able to convert matter into energy, meaning he does not need to eat, drink or sleep. Silver Surfer is able to heal other living organisms, and revitalize life on an entire planet.

The original arch-enemies of the Silver Surfer were the Fantastic Four, who eventually convinced him that betraying Galactus was the only way to regain his nobility of spirit. The Silver Surfer would later encounter many villains of the Marvel universe, including Doctor Doom and Mephisto.

The Silver Surfer was an unplanned addition to the Fantastic Four comic book series. Galactus had been designed, but artist Jack Kirby thought that such a powerful being needed a herald to announce his arrival. The surfboard was simply to make a change from spaceships. Once convinced of the character, Stan Lee added the Silver Surfer into the story and he actually became a key part of the plot line. He would later become one of  Stan Lee’s favorite characters.

The character was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in the comic book Fantastic Four #48, published in 1966.

The Silver Surfer wields the Power Cosmic, granting him superhuman strength, endurance, and senses and the ability to absorb and manipulate the universe’s ambient energy. The Surfer can navigate through interstellar space and hyperspace, which he can enter after exceeding the speed of light allowing traversing interstellar and intergalactic distances to other galaxies millions and even billions of light years away. He has proven capable of time travel on several occasions and can transport other people through time.

Norrin Radd is from the utopian planet Zenn-La, in the Deneb star system of the Milky Way galaxy. He is the son of Jartran and Elmar Radd, and he has a half-brother, Fennan Radd. Zenn-La’s ancient and significantly advanced civilization has lost the will to strive or explore, leaving the young scholar Norrin Radd restless and yearning for adventure.

Facing the destruction of his world by planet-consuming Galactus, Radd bargains with the cosmic being. In return for the safety of Zenn-La and his lover, Shalla-Bal, Radd pledges to seek out planets for the world devourer to consume as his herald.

Galactus imbues him with a portion of the Power Cosmic, transforming him into the Silver Surfer. Radd had intended to lead Galactus to uninhabited planets, but Galactus tampers with his soul to prevent this.

The Silver Surfer is among the first enemies of the Fantastic Four. He has fought Captain Marvel, Dormammu, Firelord, Galactus, and Blackheart.

Silver Surfer has partnered with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. He has also allied with  Heralds of Galactus, United Front, The Defenders, The Order, Star Masters, God Squad, and Annihilators
