The Silver Surfer was originally known as Norrin Radd, from the planet Zenn-La. He made a bargain with a cosmic entity called Galactus, serving as his herald in return for Galactus not devouring his home planet. Some of Galactus’s power was transferred to Radd, changing his appearance to that of the Silver Surfer. The surfboard, enabling faster than light travel, was also given to Radd at this time.

The purpose of the Silver Surfer was to travel the universe and locate planets for Galactus to consume. One of the planets he located was Earth. On Earth, the Silver Surfer managed to find the courage to betray Galactus, leading to his permanent exile on the planet he saved.

The Silver Surfer’s powers all originate from the “Power Cosmic”, which was bestowed by Galactus and can be used for teleportation, telekinesis, and telepathy, along with resurrection, and projecting energy. Silver Surfer is able to convert matter into energy, meaning he does not need to eat, drink or sleep. Silver Surfer is able to heal other living organisms and revitalize life on an entire planet.

The original arch-enemies of the Silver Surfer were the Fantastic Four, who eventually convinced him that betraying Galactus was the only way to regain his nobility of spirit. The Silver Surfer would later encounter many villains of the Marvel universe, including Doctor Doom and Mephisto.

The Silver Surfer was an unplanned addition to the Fantastic Four comic book series. Galactus had been designed, but artist Jack Kirby thought that such a powerful being needed a herald to announce his arrival. The surfboard was simply to make a change from spaceships. Once convinced of the character, Stan Lee added the Silver Surfer into the story and he actually became a key part of the plotline. He would later become one of Stan Lee’s favorite characters.
