Deadpool’s real name is thought to be Wade Wilson, though it is not entirely certain. Deadpool is a mutant human, frequently referred to as the “Merc with a mouth” for his extremely talkative nature.

Deadpool has a number of special abilities, including superhuman strength (a formidable force when combined with his martial arts talent and skill with a sword), enhanced reflexes, agility and stamina, and the ability to teleport with the use of a certain device. These abilities all result from the Weapon X program, led by Colonel William Stryker.

The Weapon X alterations caused the accelerated growth of tumors in Deadpool’s body at the start of the program, and his healing ability combined with these tumors to produce severe disfiguration. However, this also allows Deadpool to recover from severe head wounds, as his brain is able to regenerate.

Deadpool has made appearances with a variety of other Marvel characters, including the Avengers and Spider-Man. In one comic book, Deadpool antagonist Spider-Man by wanting to become a hero. Deadpool does not, however, have one particular nemesis, which makes him a rarity within the Marvel universe. Deadpool has, however, had a number of run-ins with Wolverine, from the X-Men, since it was the Weapon X program that gave each of them their powers.

Deadpool’s character first appeared in 1991, in the series “The New Mutants”, and was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabien Nicieza. Later, he was to feature in his own series, which gained a cult following for the unorthodox main character. In these, Deadpool is not clearly shown to be a villain, though his morals remain unclear. As the writers continually expected the Deadpool series to be cancelled, they took risks with the character. As writer Joe Kelly stated, “Nobody was paying attention. And we could get away with it.”

Created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/writer Rob Liefeld, the character first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (cover-dated February 1991).

Deadpool’s primary power is an accelerated healing factor, depicted by various writers at differing levels of efficiency. The speed of his healing factor depends on the severity of the wound and Deadpool’s mental state. It works most efficiently when he is awake, alert, and in good spirits. Deadpool’s accelerated healing factor is strong enough that he has survived complete incineration and decapitation more than once.

Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld introduced Deadpool alongside Domino and Gideon in NEW MUTANTS (1983) #98. Retroactively, Domino was revealed to actually be Vanessa Carlysle, AKA Copycat, in disguise. But even Vanessa is essential to Wade’s history.

Deadpool has many weird enemies, his arch-enemy being Ajax.

Deadpool tends to work with anyone if needed, including Cable and Domino. He’s been a part of Agency X, Astonishing Avengers, Avengers Unity Division, Code Red, Deadpool Corps, Frightful Four, Great Lakes Initiative, Heroes for Hire, Landau, Luckman, and Lake, Maggia, Mercs for Money, Secret Defenders, S.H.I.E.L.D., Six Pack, Thunderbolts, Weapon X, X-Force and the X-Men
